Choosing coir: where should growers start?

Choosing the right coir substrate is about more than selecting a product. Botanicoir’s Sales Manager for Europe and the Middle East, Krzysztof Sak, explains what growers should consider when selecting coir to support their growing system, root development and crop performance…

For growers considering a move to coir, there are a number of factors to consider before making a decision. One of the biggest mistakes is treating coir as a standard, uniform material. In reality, coir can vary considerably in its structure, processing and performance – and those differences can have a direct impact on irrigation management, root development and crop stability.

Start with your growing system

Before choosing a coir product, start by looking at your own growing conditions.

Consider:

  • Crop type – strawberry, tomato, blueberry or another protected crop
  • Climate – including temperature, radiation and humidity
  • Irrigation capacity – frequency, control and uniformity
  • Growing system – bags, pots, gutters or other systems

The substrate needs to fit your growing system, rather than the system being adapted to the substrate.

Structure matters

Of all the characteristics to consider, substrate structure is one of the most important.

The balance between fine coir particles, or pith, and coarser chips determines how the substrate behaves. This influences:

  • Air-filled porosity (AFP) and oxygen availability
  • Water-holding capacity (WHC)
  • Drainage behaviour
  • Root-zone stability

Ultimately, structure affects how easily you can manage irrigation.

A more open structure will generally provide greater drainage and air availability, while a finer structure will hold more water. The right balance depends on your crop and growing system.

You can always add water. You can’t add oxygen if the structure is wrong.

Consistency is key

Once you’ve identified the structure that suits your system, consistency becomes critical.

Reliable crop production depends on having:

  • Uniform particle distribution
  • Consistent physical characteristics
  • Repeatable quality from batch to batch

Even the most carefully designed irrigation strategy becomes difficult to manage if the substrate behaves differently from one batch to the next.

For commercial growers, consistency isn’t simply a quality benefit – it is an important part of maintaining predictable crop performance.

Match coir to your irrigation strategy

Your substrate should also reflect the level of control you have over irrigation.

For growers with more limited irrigation control, a substrate with slightly higher water retention may provide greater flexibility.

Where growers have high-frequency, precise irrigation systems, a more open, free-draining mix can provide the drainage and oxygen availability needed to manage the root zone effectively.

There isn’t one coir specification that is right for every grower. The best choice depends on how the substrate, crop, irrigation and environment work together.

Creating the right root environment

Choosing coir isn’t really about choosing a material. It’s about creating the right root environment for your crop and your growing system.

Taking the time to understand your requirements before selecting a substrate can make irrigation management more predictable, support healthy root development and make the crop easier to manage throughout the season.
