Meet the team: Kalum Balasuriya

Kalum is our managing director, and one of our three founders. He is a driving force behind the business and his vision has established a clear presence in the growing community, ensuring Botanicoir and our high-quality coco coir remain at the forefront of the UK horticultural sector.

When did you launch Botanicoir and why?

We started in 2005 as we wanted to invest in an eco-friendly, sustainable business that helps the local community. It’s important to us that when shoppers buy food grown in our grow bags, they are investing in a process that’s sustainable and looks after people.

What drives you?

Definitely seeing what our loyal growers do year after year to feed and nourish an ever-growing population.

What is your vision for the future of the business?

To make sure that we are in a steady and strong position to meet global substrate demand with 100% sustainable production processes, with the latest technology and innovation, and zero carbon emissions.

Please could you share some of the positions you have held prior to Botanicoir?

I was in IT and enjoying city life – working for multinational organisations including some of the leading global banks.

What is the best thing about what you do?

I enjoy talking to growers and dealing with different challenges every day to innovate and improve our product range. I’m also incredibly proud of our team. We are all passionate and dedicated to producing consistent, quality products, from the factory floor to looking after our customers.

How do you describe your job to your friends?

I say that I work in horticulture, helping growers with their substrate needs and working closely with them to make sure they succeed with their business ambitions.

What do you most look forward to contributing to the business as it grows?

I look forward to sharing my knowledge and helping our dedicated team grow and develop in order to take the business to the next level – so that we can continue to deliver a consistently superior quality product to our passionate growers.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

Cycling, nature walks, and the beach!
